Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Addiction Treatment

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a treatment option that induces a small electric current into the brain in order to treat depression in patients who don’t respond well to other traditional treatments and therapies. It is a noninvasive procedure where an electromagnet placed against a specific part of the brain stimulates mood control by using short magnetic bursts. The repetitive use of this treatment is why it is also called rTMS.

How Does TMS Work?

People suffering from depression are not using a part of their brain that is responsible for mood control. Activating the brain with the use of an electromagnetic coil to stimulate it helps improve the activity in that part of the brain.

The number of repetitions of the treatment, and the length of treatment depends on the patient’s needs. Treatment should be performed by specialists who can determine the patient’s suitability by observing their motor control threshold.

Because the magnetic pulse that stimulates the nerve cells is delivered painlessly, this procedure is considered noninvasive and does not require sedation.

What Is TMS Treatment Used For?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy is mainly used to treat major depressive disorders, but it may also be used to treat other mental illnesses and disorders such as:

Substance Abuse DisorderAlcoholism
Post-Traumatic Stress DisorderBipolar Disorder
SchizophreniaAnxiety
Parkinson’s DiseaseAlzheimer’s Disease

Why Is TMS Effective In Addiction Treatment?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy has been shown to be effective in treating addiction patients who may be suffering from intense cravings, or dual diagnosis patients suffering from other mental issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and others.

The noninvasive nature of this treatment is sometimes more effective in patients who don’t respond well to medical assisted treatments.

Side Effects of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy

Although there are very few side effects for the TMS therapy, some common ones may include:

  • Headache
  • Face Twitching
  • Scalp Discomfort
  • Short-term hearing loss
  • Syncope (rare)
  • Seizures (rare)

There are some rumors and myths regarding TMS that it causes memory loss, brain damage or migraine headaches but there has been no evidence for these rumors.

Is TMS Treatment Right For You?

If you are seeking treatment for addiction and correlated disorders, you may want to try psychotherapy and pharmacological pills before you consider TMS. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy may be recommended if you don’t respond well to other treatments such as antidepressants. You should avoid TMS if you are pregnant, have brain injuries, or metallic implants in your face or brain, such as stents, bullets, cochlear implants, or even metallic ink tattoos or permanent piercings.
