Starting treatment can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. At California Prime Recovery, we create a safe, structured, and supportive environment for addiction and mental health from day one. Whether you’re beginning inpatient care or enrolling in our intensive outpatient program (IOP), our team guides you with compassion and clinical expertise. We also explain the levels of care—medical detox, residential or inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), outpatient care, and sober living / transitional housing—so you can choose the right program and move confidently through each stage of recovery.
This guide helps you understand what to expect during your first week in treatment so you can feel prepared and confident as you begin.
Your first day begins with a warm welcome from our staff, followed by a comprehensive intake process. This includes:
Medical and psychological evaluations
Review of medical history and current medications
Safety screening and detox consideration (if applicable)
Introduction to your personalized treatment plan
You’ll also receive a tour of the facility, meet your case manager, and get settled into your environment.
During the first week, you’ll meet your full clinical team, which may include:
Primary therapist
Case manager
Nursing and support staff
Wellness or holistic practitioners
Together, this team collaborates on your individualized care plan and monitors your progress daily. Your treatment plan is reviewed weekly during interdisciplinary team meetings to ensure your goals are progressing and your needs are being met.
Each client at California Prime Recovery is assigned a dedicated case manager during the first week of treatment. Your case manager acts as your primary liaison for day-to-day concerns, scheduling, insurance verification, and coordination with your clinical team. Whether you have questions about your treatment plan, housing, or progress, your case manager is here to ensure you always have a clear, compassionate point of contact throughout your recovery journey.
All medication-related decisions at California Prime Recovery are made directly by our Medical Director or licensed prescribers. During your intake, a licensed medical professional will review your full medical and psychiatric history to assess any current prescriptions or potential medication needs. Our treatment facility does not alter, adjust, or manage medications independently — all medication protocols are overseen by the Medical Director to ensure your safety and proper care.
Within the first few days, you’ll begin structured therapy sessions. These include:
One-on-one sessions with your primary therapist
Small group therapy for peer connection and insight
Family therapy sessions, if appropriate
Psychoeducation groups on addiction, mental health, and recovery tools
All sessions are led by licensed professionals trained in evidence-based modalities. Group sessions are led by trained facilitators with rotating specialties, ensuring a variety of perspectives and skill sets throughout your stay.
Recovery involves more than therapy. In your first week, you’ll also be introduced to:
Nutritious meals or meal planning guidance
Mindfulness practices like yoga or breathwork
Peer support groups that foster connection and accountability
Optional holistic services (e.g., acupuncture, music therapy)

The length of time someone remains in treatment varies based on individual needs, level of care, clinical progress, and insurance considerations. Many treatment plans commonly span several weeks to a few months, though some individuals may benefit from shorter or longer engagement depending on clinical recommendations. During the first week, the clinical team focuses on assessment, stabilization, and identifying appropriate next steps rather than setting a fixed timeline. Length of stay is reviewed regularly and adjusted as treatment progresses to support safety, engagement, and long-term stability.
